Thirty five Peruvian citizens, defenders of human rights and the environment, municipal authorities, legal, technical and leading advisers of communities and community rondas, have been accused for terrorism by the (unrepresentative and lacking community authority) civil association "Community Segunda y Cajas Front"
This denunciation seeks to delegitimize those that exercised lawfully and peacefully the defence of community rights by having carried out a Local Referendum (a pacific and public act with presence of numerous national and international observers) last September 16 2007 in the districts of Ayabaca, El Carmen de la Frontera and Pacaipampa in Piura, where 97 % of the electorate expressed their rejection of mining activities of the company River Blanco Copper S.A. in their territories.
This act of terrorist accusations seeks to intimidate not only the accused but the whole society for the mere fact of expressing disagreement with certain politics that wishes to silence its citizens. These accusations represent a real danger for carrying out democratic practices that wishes to include and promote community participation in the decision making process of projects that could affect their lives, such as the practice of local referendums and furthermore puts at serious risk the essential and fundamental freedoms of freedom of thought and opinion..
